Bangka Sa Bay is a culturally driven live music and community experience produced by Free Music Collective, activating the San Francisco Bay Ferry as a floating cultural venue between Vallejo and San Francisco. Inspired by the bangka—the traditional Filipino boat symbolizing connection, journey, and shared movement—the event brings Filipino culture, music, and community storytelling onto the Bay.
Designed as both a celebration and a public-facing cultural activation, Bangka Sa Bay transforms everyday transit into an accessible live experience that welcomes families, youth, and first-time ferry riders while centering underrepresented artists.
Bangka Sa Bay sits at the intersection of Filipino culture, public transportation, and creative placemaking. By activating the ferry during historically low-ridership winter months, the event demonstrates how public infrastructure can support arts, culture, and community engagement. The experience highlights the Bay as a connector—linking cities, cultures, and creative economies—while creating visibility and opportunity for Filipino artists and Bay Area creatives.
Bangka Sa Bay is powered by collaboration, with each partner gaining tangible and cultural value:
Bangka Sa Bay serves as a replicable model for arts-led transit activations, demonstrating how culturally grounded programming can increase ridership, support artists, and generate social and economic impact across the Bay Area.
